Assam is stepping up its agricultural procurement strategy with an ambitious target of purchasing 10 lakh metric tonnes of paddy every year, in a move aimed at providing greater economic security to the state’s farming community. The target, announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is part of a broader push to strengthen the state’s paddy procurement system and ensure that farmers receive better support through the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism.
The expanded procurement plan is expected to give paddy growers a more assured market for their produce while reducing their dependence on private buyers and the possibility of distress sales. By improving access to institutional procurement, the initiative could help farmers secure more predictable returns and strengthen their confidence in continuing agricultural activities.
For Assam’s rural economy, where agriculture remains an important source of livelihood, a larger procurement network could have wider economic implications. Increased government procurement may support farm incomes, improve the movement of agricultural produce through formal supply chains and strengthen the overall paddy market in the state.
The initiative also highlights Assam’s focus on creating a more reliable agricultural ecosystem, where farmers can benefit from better price assurance and stronger market access.
