The Union Cabinet has approved eight railway multitracking projects with a total investment of ₹20,804 crore, marking another major push towards strengthening India’s railway infrastructure and improving connectivity across key regions.
The projects will cover approximately 1,196 km of railway tracks across 31 districts in nine states. The expansion is expected to address congestion on high-density railway routes while creating additional capacity for both passenger and freight movement.
A key focus of the projects is to strengthen India’s freight transportation network. The multitracking works are expected to increase the railway system’s freight-handling capacity by around 74 million tonnes, potentially supporting faster and more efficient movement of goods across major industrial and commercial corridors.
The projects are also expected to improve passenger connectivity by reducing congestion on busy routes and enabling smoother train operations. According to the government, the expanded network will directly benefit nearly 10 million people, while improving access to important economic, spiritual and tourism destinations, including Tirupati.
The railway expansion comes amid the government’s broader focus on infrastructure-led economic growth. Greater rail capacity can help reduce logistical bottlenecks, improve supply-chain efficiency and provide industries with more reliable transportation options. For businesses dependent on the movement of raw materials and finished goods, additional railway capacity could contribute to more efficient logistics and potentially lower transportation pressures.
The investment also highlights the continued role of Indian Railways in supporting regional development. By adding new tracks to heavily utilised routes, the projects are aimed at creating additional capacity while improving the overall resilience and efficiency of the railway network.
