The Centre has announced an investment of ₹2,000 crore for the upgradation of highway infrastructure in and around the Siliguri Corridor, a strategically important land link connecting India’s northeastern states with the rest of the country.
The Siliguri Corridor, popularly known as the “Chicken’s Neck,” is a narrow stretch of land in West Bengal that provides the principal road and rail connectivity between mainland India and the Northeast. Given its strategic and economic importance, strengthening infrastructure along this corridor is expected to be a major step towards improving connectivity and transportation efficiency in the region.
The proposed highway upgrade is expected to improve road capacity, travel efficiency and the movement of commercial vehicles, helping goods and essential supplies move more smoothly between the Northeast and other parts of India. Better highway infrastructure could also reduce congestion and improve connectivity for communities and businesses located along the route.
