Assam is taking another step towards expanding the use of its inland waterways for commercial cargo movement, with a vessel carrying 27 ISO tanks arriving at Bogibeel from Guwahati for the transportation of methanol to Bangladesh through National Waterway-2 (NW-2).
The shipment is linked to Assam Petrochemicals Ltd, which is preparing to transport the methanol consignment through the Brahmaputra waterway. The development highlights the increasing use of inland waterways as an alternative channel for moving industrial commodities and connecting Assam with wider regional and international markets.
The movement through NW-2 is significant for Assam’s logistics network as the waterway provides a route for transporting cargo along the Brahmaputra. Greater use of this corridor could support the movement of bulk and industrial goods while creating additional options for businesses involved in regional trade and supply chains.
The methanol shipment also points to the potential of Bogibeel as an important inland logistics point in Assam. Improved utilisation of river-based cargo routes can complement existing road and rail networks and provide businesses with another mode for transporting goods across the region.
