India and New Zealand are set to begin a new phase of their economic relationship with the implementation of their Free Trade Agreement (FTA) from October 20, 2026. The trade pact has completed the required ratification process in both countries, paving the way for the agreement to become operational.

The FTA is expected to provide Indian businesses with wider access to the New Zealand market by reducing or removing tariffs on a broad range of goods. Indian exporters across sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, pharmaceuticals, engineering products, agricultural goods and processed foods could benefit from improved access and more competitive pricing in the New Zealand market.

For New Zealand businesses, the agreement will also create greater opportunities to expand their presence in India, one of the world’s largest consumer markets. The pact covers not only merchandise trade but also areas such as services, investment and economic cooperation, giving businesses in both countries a broader framework for cross-border activity.

A major component of the agreement is its focus on investment. The pact includes a commitment involving up to USD 20 billion in investments into India, potentially supporting greater participation by New Zealand companies in the Indian economy. The agreement also seeks to strengthen cooperation in services and facilitate greater movement of professionals between the two countries.

For Indian exporters, the removal of trade barriers could help improve their competitiveness and open additional avenues for entering the New Zealand market. Industries that have traditionally faced tariff-related challenges could see greater opportunities as the new trade arrangements take effect.

The agreement comes at a time when India is expanding its network of trade partnerships to increase export opportunities, attract investment and integrate Indian businesses more closely with international markets. With the India–New Zealand FTA scheduled to take effect on October 20, businesses on both sides will now be preparing to operate under the new trade framework.
